MHS THERAPY DOG!!
We are thrilled to share some exciting news!
Thanks to the generous support of the Medfield Coalition for Public Education (MCPE), the Medfield High School Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO), the National Honor Society (NHS), and our library, we will welcome a therapy dog to our high school family after the February vacation.
Our therapy dog is coming to us from GOFI, and we are delighted to announce that the puppies were born on December 19th.
Therapy dogs have been shown to provide numerous benefits in school settings, including reducing stress and anxiety, enhancing emotional well-being, and fostering a positive and welcoming atmosphere. Medfield students have had access to therapy dogs at Wheelock, Blake, and intermittently at the high school over the past few years. Our new therapy dog will support our student’s mental health and overall well-being, offer comfort during challenging times, and be a friendly presence in our daily school life. The dog will undergo 14 months of training to ensure she will be ready for her new role as a therapy dog at MHS. In order to complete training, the dog will be here part-time through the end of this school year, and we anticipate more frequently during the fall.
We are finalizing preparations to ensure a smooth transition for our new furry friend. The dog will have designated times and areas where students can interact under the supervision of a trained handler at all times. The trained dog handlers will be Ms. Beth Sancher, English teacher, and Ms. Kerry Cowell, librarian.
We are working on plans and precautions to limit student contact with those who are allergic. Due to a significant allergy situation, it may be necessary to limit where the dog may travel in the school. However, that will not be a barrier for students who wish to work with the dog. Regarding allergies, please contact our school nurse, Ms. Brittany Hardiman, at bhardiman@email.medfield.net.
Over the next few weeks, we will ask students to offer name suggestions for our new puppy, so stay tuned! We will also have a sign-up genius wish list if anyone would like to help purchase essential items for the puppy while at school.
We will provide frequent updates on the arrival of our therapy dog. We can’t wait to see how this new addition will positively impact our students and staff.
Thank you for your continued support!
