FROM THE SCHOOL COUNSELING OFFICE

SENIORS! Local scholarships are now available!

We encourage all seniors to apply! Students should check their email or Google Classroom to access the application.

All local scholarship and award applications must be submitted no later than Friday, January 24th at 2:30 pm. No late applications will be considered.

There are two separate application processes: a general award application and specific individual applications.

  • Completion of the general award application will make students eligible for about 25 scholarships. This is a Google form students fill out one time.

  • There are also about 30 scholarships that have their own application. These applications are all due to Mrs. McGrory in the School Counseling Office by 2:30pm on January 24th.

Additionally, we have scholarships, with awards ranging from $500 - $50,000 listed on the School Counseling Website! Each scholarship has its own deadline - with many not due until January, February, or even March. Check out these scholarship opportunities on the School Counseling Website!

Please see your School Counselor with any questions.

2025 Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB)

On Tuesday, February 11th, Medfield will be offering the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery). Students should report to guidance at 7:45AM on test day.  Students can register here:

ASVAB REGISTRATION

The test, optional and open to all CURRENT JUNIORS & SENIORS, is approximately 3 hours in length. Students are reminded that they are responsible to approach teachers in order to make up all missing assignments. Students will check-in to the MHS Guidance office the morning of the exam.

The ASVAB is an interest inventory that allows students to explore potential career options. The ASVAB is designed to help students learn more about themselves and the world of work, to identify and explore potentially satisfying occupations, and develop an effective strategy to realize potential career goals.

There is no fee to take the test.  If you have any questions about registration please contact the school counseling office.

FROM THE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

(see top image of our participating students)

Congratulations to the following Medfield students on their award winning Planting Science Star Project: James Callahan, Allan Han, Connor McManama and Finn Posner.

Their project “How does the amount of H₂0 affect the amount of photosynthesis and plant growth?” has been selected to receive a Star Project Award for Fall 2024!

PlantingScience proudly recognizes recent Star Projects (https://plantingscience.org/starprojects/sp-recent) showcasing exceptional mentored/student-led plant science research. These projects highlight innovation, collaboration, and determination, selected for their quality, communication, and problem-solving. Out of 324 student projects across more than 45 classrooms only nine projects were chosen.

PlantingScience is a Student-Teacher-Scientist partnership that was founded in 2005 by the Botanical Society of America.  This innovative program facilitates mentoring relationships with real plant scientists and teams of 3-5 students in 6th-12th grade classrooms.  Through asynchronous online conversations, scientists provide support and encouragement as students design and carry out a plant-focused scientific investigation in the classroom.

Three additional projects received nominations and certificates of achievement.
Project 1: Joe Callahan, Miles Hajj, Malachy McAteer, Chase Sullivan, Liam Swartz
Project 5 : Hana Attia, Jake Bucci, Declan Haverty, Katrina Keegan, Casey Parker
Project 8: Evie Boylan, Alexandra Kappas, Joe Konopka, Lilith McGrory

Congratulations to all students on a job well done. Scientist mentors noted that Medfield students were very responsive and communicative throughout the process and they enjoyed sharing their passion for plants with the groups.

MASSACHUSETTS STATE SEAL OF BILITERACY

The Medfield Public Schools has proudly participated in the State Seal of Biliteracy program since 2019 and so far has awarded 136 state seals to our graduating seniors beginning with the class of 2020. The languages honored have included Spanish, Portuguese, Latin, French, Mandarin Chinese, Lithuanian, and Japanese. Students earn this honor upon their graduation from high school. They must demonstrate proficiency in English by attaining a score of 472 or higher on the ELA MCAS and a score of Intermediate High in each domain of the second language: Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. The assessment in the second language must be approved by DESE.  Full guidance can be found on the state seal website: https://www.doe.mass.edu/scholarships/biliteracy/

The Massachusetts Seal of Biliteracy program was signed into law in 2017 for the following reasons:

  • Encourage students to study and master languages;

  • Certify attainment of biliteracy skills;

  • Recognize the value of language diversity;

  • Provide employers with a method of identifying people with language and biliteracy skills;

  • Provide universities with a method to recognize and give credit to applicants for the attainment of high-level skills in languages;

  • Prepare students with skills that will benefit them in the labor market and the global society; and

  • Strengthen intergroup communication and honor the multiple cultures and languages in a community

While the seal itself is a graduation award, it helps us to verify and honor the diversity of languages and cultures within our community. To develop high-level skills in any second language can require hundreds of hours of immersion/ exposure. Therefore, we want all families to be aware of our participation in this program.

Testing dates for 2025 have been established: Seniors in Spanish will take the AAPPL on February 7th during the school day. Seniors in French and Mandarin will take the AAPPL on February 28th during the school day.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Ellen Toubman, department chair for World Languages and Cultures at 508-359-4367 ext 11015 or one of the school principals.

FROM MEDFIELD TV

A Legacy of Passion: The Peter Kenny Story

Pete Kenny was a late bloomer. He found his passion for sports broadcasting at age 48 and earned a degree at the Connecticut School of Broadcasting. Two years into his dream job at Medfield TV, he was diagnosed with cancer and passed away in 2010. We pay tribute to Pete each year by awarding a scholarship in his name to a Medfield High School graduate who demonstrates a passion for TV and media.

Hear Peter’s story through the voices of his friends and family, and learn about past scholarship winners in our new video, Legacy of Passion: The Peter Kenny Story.

Please help us continue Peter’s legacy by donating to the 2025 Peter Kenny Scholarship Fund. Visit www.medfield.tv/donate and add a Dedication in Memory of Peter Kenny to your donation form.

A Capella Night

Join us on Friday, JANUARY 31, 2025 at 7:00pm at the Medfield High School Auditorium for a fun-filled night to enjoy a cappella music from a wide range of talented students. The Opportunes’ style ranges from the soulful stylings of Whitney Houston to the epic drama of Labrinth, all the way to the pop hits of Beyoncé and the funky classics of Stevie Wonder.
