FROM THE SCHOOL COUNSELING OFFICE

FOOD SERVICES NEWS

Coming on March 26th, we will be serving grass-fed burgers from Walden Local, who partners with sustainable, human farmers in the New England and New York area. The Medfield Food Service Department will be purchasing the burgers using funding from the Northeast Food for Schools Grant. This grant can be used to purchase local, minimally processed food items. Throughout the school year, we have been able to purchase a variety of local produce from Massachusetts farmers including lettuce from Little Leaf Farms, apples from Carlson Orchards, cage-free eggs from Hubbardston, MA and much more! We hope all students will take advantage of this great opportunity!

GET READY FOR THE APRIL 8, 2024 TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE!

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk.

Tim Barker,  a retired prof of Astronomy & Physics at Wheaton College will be coming to the HS during Flex A next Tuesday 3/19 to share insights and prepare us for the upcoming solar eclipse on Monday April 8th. This is a relatively unique experience with the next one not visible in this area for several decades.

Students will be able to sign up through My Flex App - The class (created for that day) is listed under Ms. Berry and is called Solar Eclipse presentation.

We would love to have any student who is interested in learning a little about this upcoming solar eclipse attend this event.

Gender Representation in Tech club GRiT is a student-led club at Concord Academy that organizes and hosts an annual tech conference designed to promote gender equity in the STEM world. While all individuals are welcome at this conference, our goal is to create an open space for female and genderqueer students to explore their interests in tech. We welcome all students grades 6 through 12 (ages 12-19), regardless of previous experience.

The 2024 GRiT conference will take place on April 20, 2024, from 1-3:30 pm at Concord Academy (166 Main St, Concord, MA 01742). The conference will consist of two workshop blocks with workshops hosted by CA alums and other non-males in the tech industry. Students will be able to choose the workshop they wish to attend through a form sent to them prior to the conference.

As examples of workshops, our 2023 conference hosted workshops regarding navigating the tech world as a WOC, an introduction to creating more accessible technology, how to use technology and psychology to discover your own work style, and more!

FROM SEPAC

In 1987, President Reagan recognized March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month to increase "public awareness of the needs and the potential of Americans with developmental disabilities" and to provide the "encouragement and opportunities they need to lead productive lives and to achieve their full potential." - National Disabilities Institute. According to the CDC, "Developmental disabilities are a group of conditions due to an impairment in physical, learning, language, or behavior areas. These conditions begin during the developmental period, may impact day-to-day functioning, and usually last throughout a person's lifetime." Disability is highly nuanced as no two people are the same or experience their diagnosis the same, which can make it hard to know how to talk about it. Check out this 17-minute NPR Life Kit on talking about disabilities to learn more.

Sometimes, there’s a perception that a child’s disability/diagnosis needs to present in a certain way or severity to join SEPAC, but SEPAC is for everyone. So please mark your calendars for our spring Workshops & Parent Connection Groups:

3/19 Autism Spectrum (ASD)Parent Connection Group, 7 pm Medfield Public Safety Building
3/21 Down Syndrome Parent Connection Group, 11:30 am Medfield Public Library.
4/1 ADHD Parent Connection Group, 7 pm Medfield Public Safety Building.
4/3 Dyslexia + Language-Based Learning Disabilities Parent Connection Group - 7 pm Medfield Public Safety Building.
4/23 Executive Function with Ali Spidalieri, M.Ed BCBA, 7 pm, Blake Middle School Library. SEPAC Board meeting after.

Details are always available on our website and social media (FB & IG)! Our workshops and board meetings offer childcare, and a remote link can be made available if you'd like. Our workshops and board meetings are open to EVERYONE. You do not need a child on an IEP or 504 to attend. RSVP to SEPAC@email.medfield.net or by completing the RSVP form: https://forms.gle/SeeQg6Apmngad5dq7

Our parent connection groups are limited to parents and caregivers of children with the corresponding diagnosis. Please email sepac@email.medfield.net with questions or to join a group. If you want to connect with a parent with experience with a diagnosis not covered by our current parent connection groups, don't hesitate to contact us, and we'll work to find someone to connect with.

We hope to see you!

If you haven't taken a second yet to pre-order a yearbook copy now while supplies last, please do so ASAP. Luckily, the price has been frozen at $95 for the rest of this school year, which is a good deal since the final price has long been $100. Here is the ordering link.
