Authors

As most of your English teachers will tell you, you cannot separate the writer from the work.  Use the links below to find more information about the authors you are studying.

Biographical Dictionary – Are you sick of searching high and low for biographies?  Do you crave information on the lives of famous people?  Well, the Biography Dictionary has over 28,000 bios on notable figures, so the search is over and the cravings will cease.

Cather, Willa – This site features a brief biography on Cather, plus links to help you find books and additional information.

Chaucer, Geoffrey – With a wealth of information on Chaucer, his work, and more, it’s no wonder the Harvard English Department uses this site!

Chaucer, Geoffrey – More specific than the other Chaucer link, this site focuses mainly on The Canterbury Tales.

Dickens, Charles – This site has more than you would ever want to know about Dickens, but just in case it is missing something, there are links to other Dickens sites.

Dickens, Charles - Gads' Hill Place – This Dickens site centers around his work, rather than his life, and even includes quizzes and games to help you lean the classics.

Ellison, Ralph W. – If you’re reading The Invisible Man, make sure this site is visible to you.

Faulkner, William – Whether you need a commentary, a synopsis, or information about Faulkner’s life, this site has it.

Fitzgerald, F. Scott – There’s much more to F. Scott Fitzgerald than The Great Gatsby, and this link shows you what it is.

The Hemingway Resource Center – As the name implies, this site is the ultimate resource for info on Hemingway’s life and work.  Whether you need to buy one of his books, read his biography, view links to other sites, or enter a short story contest, this site has it goin’ on.

Morrison, Toni – Here you can get some quick background info on Morrison, or browse for one of her books.

Nash, Ogden If you’re looking for any of Nash’s poems, this site has ‘em all.  If you’re not sure who Ogden Nash is, it has a brief biography to boot.

Poe, Edgar Allan – His name may be synonymous with horror, but there’s nothing horrific about the biographical information and texts available on this link.

Poe, Edgar Allen ( House of Usher) – Though predominately devoted to “The House of Usher,” this link also has some fun Poe extras like, “Poe’s Favorite Haunts,” and “Poe’s Favorite Songs.”

Shakespeare and the Internet – This site aims, “To be a complete annotated guide to the scholarly Shakespeare resources available on Internet,” and “To present new Shakespeare material unavailable elsewhere on the Internet.”  Mission accomplished.

Shakespeare, The Complete Works of – Complete and categorized, this site features the full text of all of Shakespeare’s major plays.

Shakespeare’s Globe – According to the site, “Shakespeare's Globe is a unique international resource dedicated to the exploration of Shakespeare's work, and the playhouse for which he wrote, through the connected means of education and performance.”  I couldn’t have said it any better myself.

The Shakespeare Insult Source – If you ever feel compelled to be insulted properly, this ought to do the trick.  Use one of these on your friends and he or she will be left speechless.

Teaching Shakespeare – This site is geared toward educators, but it never hurts for students to get inside the teacher’s head – especially when it comes to Shakespeare.

Welcome to Shakey’s Place! – Begin with Shakespeare’s biography, then view summaries, links, and photos from his sonnets and plays.  There are even quiz sections and study questions to prep you for the test.

Bardquest – This site is based around a fictitious scenario from the future, but there are some great links and ideas to help you out during the Shakespeare unit.

Steinbeck, John – If you’re looking for a summary of any of Steinbeck’s novels, this is the place for you.

Steinbeck, John – This is the site of the National Steinbeck Center, and is an informative and extensive tribute to the author.

Thoreau, Henry David – Biography, works, analysis, commentary, quotes – this link transcends other Thoreau sites (get it? transcends, as in Transcendentalism).

Twain, Mark – The Huck Finn capital of the world, this link not only features a complete early edition of Huckleberry Finn, it includes illustrations, reviews, and ads.

Whitman, Walt – Robin Williams would be proud of the resources this site has on “Uncle Walt” (watch The Dead Poets Society if you don’t get the Robin Williams connection).
