The student selection process for National Honor Society (NHS) is based on a combination of national and local requirements. In order to help you understand the selection process for the National Honor Society, the four national membership standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character are described below.
Scholarship:
Students are
eligible for membership if they meet the initial scholarship standard
(earning at least a 3.33 cumulative unweighted grade
point average by the close of the first semester). Candidates must be full-time
students and members of the 10th, 11th, or 12th
grade. Candidates must have been in attendance at
Service:
A
student who demonstrates the NHS service requirement will:
Render service to the
school or community when called upon.
Uphold and maintain a
loyal school attitude.
Participate in both
school and out-of-school activities (Girl or Boy Scouts; church or synagogue groups; volunteer services for the aged, poor, or
disadvantaged).
Work well with others
and will take on difficult or inconspicuous responsibilities.
Represent his/her class
or school in interclass and interscholastic competition.
Leadership:
A
student who demonstrates the NHS leadership requirement will:
Show leadership in
classroom or organization work.
Show leadership by
promoting school activities.
Hold positions of
responsibility in school or out-of-school organizations.
Contribute ideas that
improve the civic life of the school.
Exemplify positive
qualities.
Show academic
initiative.
Provide leadership in
the classroom, at work, and in school activities.
Inspire positive
behavior in other students.
Delegate
responsibilities.
Act in a dependable
fashion.
Character
A
student who demonstrates the NHS character requirement will:
Embody the highest
standards of honesty and reliability.
Cooperate with school
regulations.
Take criticism willingly
and accept recommendations graciously.
Uphold principles of
morality and ethics.
Show courtesy, concern,
and respect for others.
Observe instructions and
rules, punctuality, and faithfulness in obligations both inside and outside of the classroom.
Avoid cheating in
written work or during examinations, and will show an unwillingness to profit by the
mistakes of others.
Actively
help to rid the school of bad influences.
