The unweighted G.P.A. is cumulative (from grade 9 through the student’s current grade at the time of the calculation) based on final grades (unless you are calculating at the semester.) Please see the detailed examples below, using the sample transcript (Appendix A), the Table of GPA values (Appendix B) and the GPA worksheet (Appendix C).

NB: Be sure NOT to include courses that do not count toward the G.P.A.(Appendix D is a list of these courses, which include Pass/Fail courses, Skill Development, Independent Studies, Teacher Aide, INDEX, and Work Release.).

• Step 2: For each school year, you must note what the value equivalent is for each course’s final grade (see Appendix B for a grade value table).

• Step 3: Using the grade value table, choose from Full Weight for full year courses, half weight for semester courses or half weight for full year courses for which you are calculating the GPA at the semester**. (Appendix C is a worksheet to help you through this process. Appendix E is a sample worksheet, based on the Appendix A sample transcript)

**For NHS purposes, the GPA includes the final grades of the year(s) completed, as well as the semester 1 grades of the student’s current year.

When calculating for NHS at semester 1, ALL courses, both full year and semester would only be calculated at half weight, since the semester courses are always calculated at half weight, and since the full year courses are only half completed.

• Step 4: Once you have the GPA values for each course (to see which GPA values were assigned for each grade on the sample transcript, see Appendix E), you must total those GPA values. In our sample, the total would be 75.665 (22.665 from grade 9, 22.5 from grade 10, 20 from grade 11, 10.50 from semester 1 of grade 12.).

• Step 5: You now divide that GPA value total by the sum of the weight values. (For example, all full year 5 credit courses that count toward the GPA would have a weight value of "1". All semester courses [or all full year courses AT the semester] would have a weight value of 0.5.) In our example, the total weight values would be 22.5. This is calculated in the following way: 18 full year courses with a weight value of 1each for a total of 18+ 5 full year courses with a weight value of 0.5 each (at the semester), for a total of 2.5, + 4 semester courses that count toward the G.P.A with a weight value of 0.5, which would equal 2. 18 + 2.5 + 2 = 22.5. Therefore, 75.665 divided by 22.5 equals a cumulative GPA of 3.36.
