Weekly News Update - October 16, 2017

SCHOOL PICTURE RE-TAKES are scheduled for Tuesday, October 17th.  Students interested in having their photos retaken can sign up in the main office.  Photos will be taken during the reading periods on Tuesday.  Students must return the original photo package at the time the photo is retaken.  Students who were absent on the photo day in September must have a photo taken on Tuesday for the school ID cards.  Photo packages would be available to any of these students upon request.


DATE CHANGE: The MHS Site Council meeting originally scheduled for MONDAY, October 16th has been changed to MONDAY, November 13th at 3:15 pm in the main office conference room.

Buy a wreath...help a music student!
The annual Medfield Music Association Wreath Sale has kicked off and purchases will help offset costs associated with this year’s music trip. (See flyer posted below.) Wreaths are $20 each and can be purchased from music students or directly from the MMA by using the form in the on the MMA website at www.medfieldmusicassociation.com.  Deadline to order is Thursday, November 9th; wreaths will be delivered the Saturday after Thanksgiving (Nov. 25th).

MEDFIELD COALITION FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION
The MCPE is turning 30! This week marks the kick-off of our 30th year fundraising campaign.  Everyone received a donation request letter in your mail box earlier this week.  We kindly ask for your generosity so we can continue funding innovation in our schools.  We want to turn every mailbox in town blue over the next 30 days as we reach our goal of $75,000!  Please show your support and we thank you. Keep in mind for companies that match gifts to education (like Fidelity, etc), the MCPE is a 501(c)3  charitable organization and qualifies for many of these match programs.  Go Big Blue!

The MHS Guidance Department is hosting its annual FINANCIAL AID NIGHT on Wednesday, October 11, 2017. The presentation will begin at 6:30 pm in the HS auditorium. All junior and senior parents interested in learning more about the college/financial aid process are welcome to attend.  A financial aid expert from the Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority (MEFA) will present various topics including: financial aid application process, completing the FAFSA, information on scholarships and loans, and resources for families. We hope you can join us on the 11th!

MCPE UPDATE
The MCPE is turning 30!  Be on the lookout for more details in your mailbox.  We want to remind everyone of our ongoing book drive in partnership with Park Street Books.  Bring in your nearly-new children's books to Park Street and mention the MCPE fundraiser. Depending on their condition and popularity, a donation will be made to the MCPE so we can continue funding innovation in our schools. Books that don't meet condition requirements will be given to Children's Hospital - it's a win win!  

SAVE THE DATE!  The annual MCPE Spelling Bee will be held on Tuesday May 1st for grades 2-5 at MHS.

ANGEL RUN NEWS
It's time to register for the annual MFi Angel Run. Join our 5K training program and three times this week set out for a 30 minute practice. That's 5 cycles of 3 minutes of running followed by 3 minutes of walking. It's that easy. New exercise next week. You will be race ready for the December 3rd event.

The Angel Run is still auditioning singers to perform the National Anthem at the start of the race. Check out the MedfieldFoundation.org website for details.

Friday, October 6th is a Teacher Professional Day.  HS Students will have an EARLY DISMISSAL at 11:10 am.  ALL Medfield Public Schools will be CLOSED on Monday, October 9th in observance of the Columbus Day holiday.

 

OPEN GRADEBOOKS  
In lieu of progress reports, teachers have made their gradebooks open to students and families from Monday, October 2 through Wednesday, October 4.  Additional information about accessing this information will be sent home via email on Monday, October 2.

ATTENTION JUNIORS!
The deadline to register for the October 14th PSATs in the MHS guidance office is fast approaching. You must register by FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6th! All members of the Class of 2019 are encouraged to take the PSAT in preparation for future college entrance exams.  Students can register through the guidance office by clicking here:  PSAT REGISTRATION  Students can drop off payment and pick up a prep booklet in the guidance office. The cost for the PSAT is $27.  Checks should be made out to:  MEDFIELD HIGH SCHOOL.  If financial assistance is required please contact guidance at 508-359-2482 to request a fee waiver.

Our first “PTO Presents” had MHS Coordinator of Social & Emotional Learning, Dr. David Worthley, speak about the many pressures that our teens encounter, with suggestions on how parents can help their children navigate the stressful adolescent years.  We thank the many parents who attended.

MEDFIELD MUSIC ASSOCIATION NOTES
Join us on Tuesday, Oct. 4th from 6:30 to 7:30 pm when the MMA holds its first and most important meeting of the year in the MHS Music Room. All music parents are invited to review and vote on the 2017/18 Music Department funding request, hear what plans are in store for the months ahead, and learn more about the MMA.


The MMA and MHS Theatre Society thank all the MHS performing arts students who helped earn the “Most Informative” booth award at Medfield Day this year! The two organizations teamed up to sponsor the booth which featured student performers from band, choir and orchestra, plus face painting and other entertainment provided by MHS Theatre Society students who did a fantastic job engaging the crowd.


Don’t miss the new “Celebrating Medfield Arts” banner officially installed over the weekend on the Tilden Village/Medfield High School fence facing the MHS Lowell Mason Auditorium!  Together, the MMA, Friends of MHS Theatre Society, and MHS Art Department raised sponsorship funds from local businesses and organizations to support the respective arts efforts, while also celebrating the role they play in our Medfield community and schools. Special thanks to Park Street Books, Needham Bank, MEMO, and Roche Bros/Brothers Marketplace for being lead sponsors of the initiative; and to the Medfield Cultural Council and the Cultural Alliance of Medfield for their support.

Mark Bissell and Margaret Travis have also been named 2018 National Merit Semifinalists. H FOR YOUR TRASH!There is a box top collecting box in the MHS main office.  Although high schools are not able to receive the money from box top collections, the middle and elementary schools will be able to benefit. Please send in any box tops you have lying around and perhaps keep a ziplock bag in the kitchen to collect new ones. Send them in every so often and they will be collected and given to the other schools. Thank you so much for your support.

TUESDAY, September 12th is Picture Day at MHS.  All students will have their photos taken for their ID cards.  Photo packages will be available for purchase. Jeff Sperling has sent an email with order information to all parents. Order forms will also be available in the main office.
 

WEDNESDAY, September 13th at 7:00 pm the Medfield High School PTO will hold their first meeting of the year in the library.  All MHS parents are invited to attend!

Tuesday, Sept. 12 at the Zullo Gallery, 7:30 to 9 p.m.: A Ukulele welcome, MHS student speakers, music staff remarks, plus refreshments, beer/wine, and the open Zullo deck – it’s all happening at the Zullo Gallery for the MMA Kickoff to launch another successful year in music. Short, inspirational portion will begin about 8 p.m. Come get a sneak preview of what’s ahead, meet staff and parents, and have some fun. MHS students participating: Zoey Pollard on Ukulele, and Gideon Lung, Jane Clifford and Katharine Lapham as guest speakers. There will be a new forum each month open to you and your questions.  RSVP  here and submit questions or future topic suggestions. Program is Wednesday, September 13th at 7pm in the MHS Library. And feel free to stay for the PTO business meeting immediately following at 8pm. All are welcome.

The Boys’ Varsity Soccer team will be holding a CAR WASHfrom 10:00 am - 2:00 pm behind Town Hall on Sunday, Sept. 10th to help with program expenses.  Please swing by to clean up your car for the start of the school year!  Welcome back Warriors!

The MHS Student Council will sponsor a “Welcome Dance” for all MHS gr 9 students (only) on Friday, September 8th from 7:00-9:30 pm in the HS cafeteria.  Tickets will be on sale during all lunches beginning Tuesday, September 5th.

Weekly News Update - August 30, 2017

Welcome back!  We look forward to another safe and successful year for our Medfield High School community. Please check this site frequently for updates on upcoming events and special programs and news highlighting student and teacher accomplishments. On FRIDAY, September 1st all MHS students will be released for EARLY DISMISSAL  at 11:10 am. On MONDAY, September 4th all Medfield Public Schools will be CLOSED in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

 
The MHS Theatre Society will be holding an informational meeting immediately after school on Wednesday, August 30th in the auditorium to discuss the upcoming year. This meeting will include details about auditions for our fall production of The Snow Queen.  Auditions will be held on Tuesday, September 5, with call backs on the 6th.  Those interested in participating backstage in The Snow Queen should also plan to attend.  Those unable to attend the informational meeting can find the information online at http://medfielddrama.weebly.com.

 
FROM THE MAIN OFFICE: We do ask that a parent or guardian call the school early (or even the day before) on any day(s) your student will be absent. The MHS absence report line is 508-242-8500.  Please clearly state the child’s name and grade, who is calling and the reason for the absence.  For dismissals, your student can drop a note (signed by you!) in the main office before school or you can call us. During school hours you can call the main office at 508-359-4367. If possible, please call us early to lessen disruption of the school day.
