ALL Medfield Public Schools will be CLOSED for SCHOOL VACATION WEEK February 18 - 22.  Classes will resume on MONDAY, February 25.

2019 SCHOLASTIC ART & WRITING AWARDS

The Medfield High School is proud to announce this year’s recipients of the annual Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.  Writing awards in the personal essay category included seniors Grace Mitchell (Silver Key) and Kathryn Predella (Silver Key).  Abby Glynn, gr. 11, Ella Kohler, gr. 11, Rebecca Lee, gr. 12 and Amy Schubert, gr. 12 received Honorable Mention awards for their personal essay submissions.  Juniors Ella Kohler (Gold Key) and Sophia Gustafson (Honorable Mention) were recognized for their outstanding poetry writing. For their science fiction work, Antonia Rijo, gr. 10 and Anna DeBettencourt, gr. 11, received Honorable Mentions.  In the short story category, senior Katelyn Malvese was awarded an Honorable Mention, as were seniors Kathryn Predella and Owen Previte, and junior Ben Rothstein for their submissions in the humor genre.

From the MHS Visual Arts department, award winners included senior Frannie McCarthy (Silver Key) for her digital paintings Sleepy Hollow (bottom right) and Become Human.  Senior Meredith Kratochwill received Honorable Mention awards for her mixed media work, Influenced, and for her painting entitled, Beautiful Frustration.  Meredith also received a Silver Key recognition for her painting, Matthew (top right).  Junior Luga Leger won the prestigious Gold Key award for his drawing Expired (bottom left) and senior Kasey Douglas received an Honorable Mention for her linocut print, Beware of False Queens (top left).  Congratulations to all and GO WARRIORS!

                            

 

                                                           

SAVE THE DATE!  The Medfield High School PROGRAM OF STUDIES NIGHT is scheduled for THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 28th.  The program for incoming grade 9 parents and students will begin at 6:30 pm and the subsequent program for rising grade 10 - 12 parents (only) will begin at 7:30 pm.  Watch for more information and emails regarding this important program in the weeks ahead.

2019 MHS HALL OF EXCELLENCE

ANGP/SENIOR FASHION SHOW UPDATE

Senior Fashion Show Tickets NOW ON SALE!  Members of the Class of 2019 will take to the runway on March 23 to model the latest prom fashions.  This annual fundraiser for ANGP is not to be missed. 2019 AP EXAM REGISTRATION INFORMATION - All students enrolled in AP course will be able to register and pay by visiting the APTS website.  All registrations must be done online through the APTS registration website.  In April, counselors will meet with all AP students to discuss the following: details of the Medfield-specific AP exam schedule; how to send scores to colleges; accommodations for AP exams; potential conflicts with exams; and financial aid.

LOOKING AHEAD:

Medfield Youth Outreach is piloting a new after school Youth Comedy Program for students in grades 8-12 in partnership with Kathe Farris, a stand-up instructor at ImprovBoston and a Medfield parent. The program will take place on Tuesdays from 2:15 pm to 3:30 pm at the Medfield Youth Outreach Office and will run from February 26th through April 2nd.

Our purpose is to bring a group of young people together who share a common interest in comedy. Through supportive instruction, students will start with the fundamentals of comedy writing and work their way up to creating their own stand-up comedy set (performance optional)! Program Objectives:

  • Meet new people who are interested in comedy
  • Discover the basic principles of stand up comedy
  • Learn how to write and deliver a joke
  • Performing is an option but not a requirement.    

The program fee is $50, but there are scholarship spots available. Wednesday, February 6th is a TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DAY.  All MHS students will have an early dismissal time of 11:10 am.

FROM THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT... A round of applause and congratulations to MHS music students Matthew McGrory, Dylan Brunelli, and Kathryn Predella who have been selected for the 2019 All-State Music Festival.  They will join other top music students from across the state in this three day festival in Boston, February 28 - March 2. The festival will culminate with a performance at Symphony Hall.  This is the highest number of choral students Medfield has ever had selected for this festival! GO WARRIORS!

MHS PTO UPDATE - The next Medfield High School PTO meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 6th at 7:00 pm in the HS library.  All MHS parents are invited to attend.

Medfield Talks is pleased to present our next speaker, Jessica Minahan who will discuss Reducing Stress and Anxiety in the Classroom February 6th from 9:00-11:00 am in the Wheelock School cafeteria. BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION - There is a box top collecting box in the MHS main office.  Although high schools are not able to receive the money from box top collections, the other 4 Medfield Public Schools will be able to benefit.  Please send in any box tops you have lying around and perhaps keep a ziplock bag in the kitchen to collect new ones. MHS PTO NEWSMedfield Talks is pleased to present our next speaker, Jessica Minahan who will discuss Reducing Stress and Anxiety in the Classroom on February 6th from 9:00-11:00 am in the Wheelock School Cafeteria.  Jessica will present to parents on student anxiety and stress.  She will present to elementary teachers later in the day.

Jessica Minahan is a licensed and board-certified behavior analyst (BCBA), author, special educator, and consultant to schools internationally. Since 2000 she has worked with students who struggle with mental health issues and challenging behavior in public school systems.  She specializes in training staff and creating behavior intervention plans for students who demonstrate explosive and unsafe behavior. She also works with students who have emotional and behavioral disabilities, anxiety disorders, or high-functioning Autism. Her particular interest is to serve these students by combining behavioral interventions with a comprehensive knowledge of best practices for those with complex mental health profiles and learning needs.  Jessica Minahan is brought to Medfield through an MCPE grant and a donation from Medfield Talks. MCPE’s  ANNUAL TRIVIA NIGHT is coming!  On February 8, MCPE will host its Annual Trivia Night. Gather your team and get ready to show your collective brainpower. This year's event will be held at Primavera in Millis. In a fun change of format, teams can have up to 8 people, so the competition should be even more lively this year! BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION - There is a box top collecting box in the MHS main office.  Although high schools are not able to receive the money from box top collections, the other 4 Medfield Public Schools will be able to benefit.  Please send in any box tops you have lying around and perhaps keep a ziplock bag in the kitchen to collect new ones. JAZZ WINTERFEST IS COMING!

Students in the MHS Jazz Choir and Jazz Band will present a concert on Wednesday, January 23rd at 7:00 pm in the HS auditorium. Students will perform a variety of works featuring a wide array of soloists. All are invited to come see our hard-working and talented student musicians.

We are pleased to share that Mrs. Kathy Mahoney had a baby boy on Monday, January 21, 2019! Mrs. Mahoney will be out on maternity leave until May 28, 2019. Mrs. Alyse DiLuzio will be covering Mrs. Mahoney's leave. Mrs. DiLuzio is an experienced guidance counselor, having worked for many years with the students at Framingham High School. Most recently, Mrs. DiLuzio worked at Boston College as a program manager for their City Connects program. Mrs. DiLuzio earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Providence College and her Master of Arts in School Counseling from Boston College. Medfield After Dark is the MHS Theatre Society's final performance of the year, and auditions are coming up soon! Auditions are February 12th, after school in the auditorium. This is a great, low commitment show to be a part of for anyone who wants to see what being in a show is like. The performance is May 4th. The next meeting of the Medfield High School SITE COUNCIL is Monday, January 14th at 3:15 pm in the main office conference room.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 18th is a TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DAY.  MHS students will be dismissed at 11:10 am.  MONDAY, JANUARY 21st all Medfield Public Schools will be CLOSED in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.

Term 2 ends on FRIDAY, JANUARY 18th.  Report cards will be available via the Aspen portal at the end of the day on MONDAY, JANUARY 28th.

ANGP/SENIOR FASHION SHOW UPDATE - The Senior Fashion Show will be held on Saturday, March 23rd.  The Class of 2019 will take center stage modeling this Spring’s prom fashions to help raise money for their All Night Graduation Party.  A PARENT INFORMATION & VOLUNTEER MEETING is scheduled for Tuesday, January 22nd, at 7:00 pm in HS cafeteria.  Volunteers are needed to help seniors select gowns and tuxedos and work the night of the show.  Parents of all classes are welcome. FROM THE BLAKE BLOOD DRIVE COMMITTEE

Dear Medfield Community,

Monday, January 21st, we will be holding our 5th annual American Red Cross blood drive at the Blake Middle School gym from 8:00 am-2:00 pm. Many of our Blake Middle School students play a major role in the running of this blood drive and they would love to see you there. The Blake blood drive committee has a goal of 125 donors, and right now we only have 20. Please consider donating blood, the students would be beyond grateful to see you there.
