MRSA Notification

What is MRSA?
•	A type of “staph” infection
•	Often causes skin infections
•	Resistant to several common antibiotics, including Penicillin
What does it look like?
•	Infected wound/skin
•	Spider bite
•	Impetigo
•	Turf/rug burn
•	Boil
How do you get MRSA?
•	Touching someone’s infected skin
•	Touching contaminated surfaces such as door knobs, light switches and keyboards
•	Sharing personal items (towels, soap, razors, water bottles)
•	Overusing and misusing antibiotics (missing doses or not finishing them)

How is MRSA treated?
By a healthcare provider who may:
•	Drain and/or culture the wound
•	Prescribe an antibiotic and/or wound/skin cleaner
How can we stop the spread of MRSA?
•	Wash your hands often with warm water and soap
•	Use hand sanitizers when soap and water are not available
•	Shower immediately after physical activity
•	After each use, bring uniforms home to be laundered in hot water and dried in a hot dryer
•	Do not share personal items, clothing or sports equipment
•	Avoid contact with other peoples wounds or bandages
•	Report skin infections to the school nurse or your healthcare provider
•	Keep cuts and scrapes clean and covered with a bandage until completely healed
•	Regularly wipe down shared surfaces such as desks, door knobs, light switches, telephones and keyboards
•	Clean and sanitize athletic gear weekly, including helmets, pads, and shin guards, and air out regularly
To clean, one teaspoon of bleach should be mixed with a quart of water in a spray bottle, and sprayed on all equipment and allowed to dry.
